How to hang a picture with two level hooks

Two hooks reduce rotation, but only when both marks share one height and sit at equal offsets from the intended frame centerline.

Short answerFor hooks 18 in apart, mark 9 in left and 9 in right of center—both at the same calculated height.

Start with one centerline

Mark the horizontal center of the frame position on the wall. Do not measure both hooks independently from a corner or wall edge; small errors compound and can shift the frame.

Calculate the common height

For a 24-inch-high frame centered at 60 inches, the top edge should be 72 inches high. If the D-rings sit 3 inches below the frame top, both hook marks belong at 69 inches.

hook height = 60 + (24 ÷ 2) − 3 = 69 in

Split the spacing

If the measured center-to-center spacing between D-rings is 18 inches, divide it by two. Place one mark 9 inches left of the frame centerline and the other 9 inches right.

horizontal offsets = −(18 ÷ 2), +(18 ÷ 2) = −9, +9 in

Level and verify

Use a level between the two marks. Confirm the frame width can accommodate the entered spacing and that the selected anchors are appropriate for the combined frame and glazing weight.
