Useful math, visible assumptions.
Hangometry separates deterministic measurements from design judgment and structural safety. Every calculator shows its inputs and explains where a professional, supplier, or full-size physical test should take over.
Hanging marks
The desired frame center describes where the artwork should sit. The hardware drop converts that visual position into the physical mark for the hook or nail.
hook height = center height + (frame height ÷ 2) − hardware dropFor two hooks, the entered separation is divided equally around the frame centerline. Measure hanging wire under upward tension. Hangometry does not determine whether a fastener is safe for a wall or load.
Art proportion
For art visually anchored to a sofa, bed, or console, the size planner returns a working range of 60–75% of that reference width.
total art width = reference width × 0.60 … 0.75This is intentionally a range, not a claim that one proportion fits every room. Wall height, negative space, architecture, viewing distance, and personal preference can justify a different choice. Test the outline with painter’s tape.
Mixed-frame layouts
The mixed planner treats every outer frame as a rectangle. Row layouts align frame centers; grids size each column and row to its largest member; staggered layouts split frames into two centered rows.

Frames and mats
The mat opening subtracts the chosen overlap from every artwork edge. The outside estimate then adds the mat border and visible frame face.
opening width = artwork width − (2 × overlap)Frame suppliers may describe dimensions differently. Confirm the rebate, overlap, glass, backing, and moulding profile before ordering or cutting. Valuable work belongs with a conservation framer.
Print resolution
Physical print size is pixel count divided by target pixels per inch. The tool says PPI because image sampling and printer dot placement are different concepts, even though labs sometimes use DPI informally.
print width in inches = pixel width ÷ target PPIPixel density alone cannot guarantee quality. Focus, compression, noise, sharpening, paper, print process, and viewing distance matter.
