How to plan a mixed-frame gallery wall

A mixed gallery becomes manageable when the full arrangement has one center and every frame is positioned as an offset from it.

Short answerThree frames measuring 16×20, 12×16, and 16×20 in a row with 3 in gaps create a 50×20 in arrangement.

Record outer frame dimensions

Measure the outside width and height of every frame. Do not use print or mat-opening dimensions. For this example the frames are 16×20, 12×16, and 16×20 inches.

Choose the gap and alignment

A centered row with 3-inch gaps has a total width of 50 inches. The tallest frames define a 20-inch total height; the smaller middle frame sits vertically centered.

16 + 3 + 12 + 3 + 16 = 50 in

Transfer from the arrangement center

The frame centers land 17 inches left, directly on center, and 17 inches right of the arrangement centerline. Mark that master center on the wall, then measure outward.

Convert centers into hardware marks

Frame-center offsets position the artwork, not the nails. Measure wire or D-ring drop for each frame and run the hanging calculation separately. Paper templates provide a useful final check before drilling.
