How to make gallery wall paper templates

Paper templates let you inspect the complete arrangement at full size. The reliable method is to mark each template's center and place every center from one shared wall reference.

Short answerFor a 62 in-wide grouping centered at 72 in from the left wall edge, the full outline starts at 41 in and ends at 103 in.

Trace the outer frame, not the artwork opening

Place each frame on kraft paper or another removable template material and trace its full outside dimensions. Label the frame number, orientation, top edge, width, and height. Cut on the outer line.

Mark the exact center of every template

Fold or measure each template to find its horizontal and vertical center. Draw a short cross at that point. The cross is what connects the full-size template to the scaled plan.

Establish one shared wall reference

Suppose the planned arrangement is 62 inches wide and its visual center is 72 inches from the left reference edge. Half the grouping width is 31 inches.

Left edge = 72 - 31 = 41 in · Right edge = 72 + 31 = 103 in

Mark the arrangement center with removable tape. Do not place later frames by measuring from a neighboring frame; small errors compound across the wall.

Transfer each frame-center offset

If frame 03 is 18 inches right and 6 inches above the arrangement center, place its template-center cross exactly at that offset. Repeat from the same zero point for every frame.

Frame 03 center = zero point + 18 in right + 6 in up

Approve the outline before hardware marks

Use low-tack painter's tape suitable for the wall finish. View the templates from the entrance, seating position, and side angles. Confirm furniture clearance, switches, vents, trim, and door movement.

Move from frame centers to hooks

Only after the arrangement is approved should you measure each frame's actual hardware drop and spacing. Transfer hook marks independently from the plan's centerlines. The template proves placement; it does not select a structurally safe fastener.

Final safety check

Before drilling, verify wall material, hidden utilities, frame weight, fastener rating, and manufacturer instructions. Stop and use a qualified installer when the wall or load is uncertain.
